Good Bye Takeout

Takeout Menus

It’s been a while since my last post. I was very busy with planning for and executing on my mom’s birthday celebration. More on that later.

As I reflect, it’s only been about 9 months since I started this journey and I’m a long way from the “clueless cook” I once was.  Tomorrow is trash and recycling day and as a symbolic gesture I am tossing out all of my takeout menus with the recyclables. This isn’t to say that I will never order out when time is an issue, but more often than not I shall continue to cook my own meals, not only to save on money and improve my skill but also to be more aware of what I am putting into my body. It’s a win, no matter how you look at it.

  1. Good riddance! Have you gone through your kitchen cabinets and removed your canned foods yet? Over the summer I cleaned out my cupboard and donated all of my canned soups/stocks/vegetables/beans etc to charity. Almost everything that we eat at home is now homemade and it feels great. It’s a great feeling knowing that you can replicate many things that you can buy at a supermarket (or order via take-out) with a minimal amount of training.

  2. I haven’t thrown the canned stuff out yet. I’m not at that stage, but hope to be soon. I imagine some canned things have their value, but understanding essentials will come over time. Also for things liked crushed tomatoes I also haven’t learned the art of preserving. Living alone also means that turn over is not as high with respect to food so I have to be careful about food going bad. Really happy though about being comfortable in the kitchen. Every day is a learning experience.
